IEC 61229:2002 pdf download.Rigid protective covers for live working on a.c. installations
1 Scope
International Standard IEC 61 229 is applicable to rigid insulating covers for live working on a.c. installations, including those described in IEC 60743. The barriers, having dielectric withstand which depends on the positioning clearance, are excluded from this standard. 1.1 Classes Six classes of covers, differing in electrical characteristics, are provided and designated as class 0, 1 , 2, 3, 4 and 5. 1.2 Categories Five categories of covers, differing in special properties related to acid, oil, extreme low temperature, extreme high temperature, and humidity are provided. They are designated A, H, C, W and P, respectively. 1.3 Types The type depends on the piece to be protected.

3 Definitions
For the purpose of this International Standard, the following definitions apply. 3.1 Terms defined in accordance with IEC 60050(1 21 ), IEC 60050(151 ) and IEC 60050(601 ) 3.1.1 type test a test of one or more devices made to a certain design to show that the design meets certain specifications [IEV 1 51 -04-1 5] 3.1.2 routine test a test to which each individual device is subjected during or after manufacture to ascertain whether it complies with certain criteria. [IEV 1 51 -04-1 6] 3.1.3 sampling test a test on a number of devices taken at random from a batch [IEV 1 51 -04-1 7] 3.1.4 acceptance test a contractual test to prove to the customer that the device meets certain conditions of its specification [IEV 1 51 -04-20] 3.1.5 electrical puncture a disruptive breakdown through a solid insulant [IEV 1 21 -03-1 3, modified] 3.1.6 flashover an arc by-passing an insulating body [IEV 1 21 -03-1 4] 3.1.7 nominal voltage of a system a suitable approximate value of voltage used to designate or identify a system [IEV 601 -01 -21 ]3.2 Terms defined in accordance with IEC 61 31 8 3.2.1 minor defect a minor defect is a defect that is not likely to reduce materially the usability of the unit or product for its intended purpose, or is a departure from established standards having little bearing on the effective use or operation of the unit (see 2.6 of IEC 61 31 8) 3.2.2 major defect a major defect is a defect, other than critical, that is likely to result in failure, or to reduce materially the usability of the unit of product for its intended purpose (see 2.5 of IEC 61 31 8) 3.2.3 critical defect a critical defect is a defect that judgment and experience indicate is likely to result in hazardous or unsafe conditions for individuals using, maintaining or depending upon the product; or a defect that judgment and experience indicate is likely to prevent performance of the function of a major end item (see 2.4 of IEC 61 31 8) 3.3 Terms defined in accordance with IEC 60743 3.3.1 protective covers generally made of insulating material, they are used to cover live or non-energized elements in order to avoid accidental contact They can be rigid or flexible and either shaped or in sheets (see 1 .5 of IEC 60743) NOTE In this standard the word “cover” includes the meaning “protective cover”.
